Egregious DRM and poor matchmaking mar an otherwise surprisingly fun and accessible multiplayer Gotham City Imposters is a lot fun, very enjoyable, but a little buggy when matchmaking. It is not going to appeal to fans of realistic FPS’ and there are limitations in terms of gameplay given that it is predominantly an online fps and nothing more. If you’ve caught a nasty case of first-person-shooter fatigue, you might be wondering what the genre needs to do to reignite your interest. Ever since it debuted, IGN’s been a bit baffled by Gotham City Impostors. It’s a downloadable Matchmaking takes way too long. , Graphics It’s bright and.
More so than any of Batman’s various forms over the ages, Gotham City Impostors seems to harbour most of its influences from the Adam West era, with slapstick noises, goofy humour and corny dialogue taken straight out of the s. I’m actually surprised “Pow” and “Thwack” aren’t plastered over the screen when you hit somebody, though with the way Monolith and Warner Bros have assembled their goofy creation I imagine there’s already plans to flog that down the line as premium DLC.
Sold for a skimpy Microsoft Points, Gotham City Impostors’ initial charge is clearly intended to be your first of many. But can an unpalatable focus on shaking its players until money falls out be enough to completely cripple a six-versus-six online shooter? The answer it’s yes, by the way won’t surprise you. The core idea behind Gotham City Impostors is wonderful, and there’s plenty here that tickles my fancy, but it’s hard to get behind a game that seems to be designed with such utter contempt for its players.
Gotham City Impostors Reviews
Okay, who saw Gotham City Impostors coming? Batman and apparently Joker as well, have both left Gotham City leaving it in the hands of its citizens. The citizens however, seem to be a bit loopy after surviving a few decades of idolizing a man dressed like a bat and demonizing a clown. The entire concept is pretty bonkers. But then again, a game with a creative concept or good art has never been an indicator of perfection or even overall quality.
Despite the charm and kookiness, can the game hold up under the harsh, cold, critical spotlight? The game is simply not content with letting you play an average, serious shooter; instead it creates a tone very rarely seen in online shooters, omitting one extremely popular, memetic, cartoonish, cult classic entry into the genre.
The art direction seeps its way even into the mechanics. For instance, the balancing point of the Defender being a gigantic, thick-necked gunner who is able to withstand more fire than other characters, but his cartoonishly massive body size makes him an easier target to pump rounds into. This game acts as a perfect antithesis, and possible deconstruction of, the average online shooter mindset. Or has the game read you a little too perfectly?
Is the matchmaking really bad…
Skip to Content. Based on DC Comics characters, this cartoon shooter is a tale of good versus evil. But combat is the name of the game — with lots of weapons, explosives, and other gadgets used to destroy the other team –so it doesn’t have a very positive message. Plus, gamers can play as the good guys or the bad guys. One team has people dressed as Batman, who is a positive role model for the most part, but the other team has people dressed as the malevolent The Joker.
The gadget-enabled shooter at the heart of Gotham City Impostors is fun, Player A: “Who invented this f***ing matchmaking?” Player B: “You just read my mind.” 1 There are five body types, and as with everything else they take an then defend it for long enough that propaganda starts playing – at this.
A free-to-play version of Gotham City Impostors apparently launched very quietly on Steam yesterday. What’s curious is there seems to be zero official word from Monolith or publisher Warner Bros. Interactive on the matter. What’s more, the game appeared as an unofficial listing on Steam’s Open Steamworks database earlier this week. There are downloadable content packs listed on impostors ‘ Steam page too, although the price list looks oddly incomplete.
It very much seems the game launched accidentally, but it’s definitely there. We’re downloading it right now, and people are playing it. We’ve reached out to Warner Bros. Interactive for comment. It says those who download the new Steam version have “will have access to the original game, as well as all DLC packs, which includes new maps, weapons, mascots and more.

B unit , 21 Feb 16 Jun From the very first cutscene, Gotham City Imposters immediately separates itself from plethora of rather mundane shooters which have flooded the market over the past decade. The Basics : Aside from a short tutorial and a limited challenge mode, Gotham Imposters is strictly multiplayer only. Neither of these objective gametypes revolutionize the FPS genre, but the unique twists presented through both the toxic gas spewing domination points, and the struggle over a battery to power a propaganda machine serve as humorous means to distinguish the experience from your standard shooter’s offering.

You can, for example, soar in the air and then launch yourself at a person to damage or kill them. I bought it yesterday and am enjoying it. I do not have any experience with TF2, but have played lots of Call of Duty and Bioshock 2 to compare. I really enjoy the emphasis on using height, with all of the different toys you can use to obtain it, from the glider allowing you to soar ahead and dive on your opponents, to spring shoes allowing you to jump or double jump from about anywhere.
The weapons and most of the upgrades are fairly run-of-the-mill with a few nice twists in there, like my gun mod that points out nearby enemies via smell stink clouds appear where they are, even if they are behind corners.
Interactive Entertainment takes ‘GOTHAM CITY IMPOSTORS’ FREE TO PLAY! Players will also experience join-in-progress matchmaking that ensures Predator 2, TRON and the No One Lives Forever franchise.
I hope they implement more character factions beyond Batman and Joker. Here is the trailer from E3. I have to say it looks better than I thought it would. HA HA Depends on the release date. Thanks for posting the vid. It is on XBLA so it won’t be that expensive. Ask Blacklight Tango Down. If you build it, they will come.

Gotham City Imposters going free to play
Tuesday i’ve spent about 20 minutes in pre-match lobby with some Asian dude and -probably- Seananners. I got it the night it came out I couldn’t get into a game for the life of me. Later that day and yesterday it was a lot better. I’m hoping it’s just a matter of nobody playing it. That being said it doesn’t seem to be very good at balancing teams whenever I do manage to get into a game. Yeah, I’m having trouble getting matches on Steam too, but when I do it’s against people of high levels.
Fix for an issue where party members take upwards of a minute to be pulled into the Fix for a crash when the game is minimized as the matchmaking lobby is reformed. From the Main Menu on Gotham City Impostors, click ‘Play Now! Fixed long load times when connections cannot be made to web services.
Read this massive legal agreement before playing! And this one! We know it’s a pain, you’ll be playing soon. Now create a Warner Bros. Checking for downloadable content Class-based shooter Gotham City Impostors snuck out of Warner’s back door earlier this week, which strikes you as unusual for a first-person shooter based on one of the biggest licenses around and made by Monolith, developers of Condemned and FEAR. Something to do with its extraordinarily large amount of in-game purchases, perhaps?
Or maybe Gotham City Impostors isn’t Its matchmaking system certainly isn’t. It almost never works quickly or smoothly – instead, be prepared for regular waits of five to 10 minutes, frequent cancellations and dropouts, and many disconnections. This is an exchange two of my teammates had as a new game finally started:.
Bad matchmaking or nobody playing this on Steam?
It was released February 8, for MSP. The Dark Knight has finally hit his stride in video games with the award-winning hits Arkham Asylum and, more recently, Arkham City. While these games offered amazing single-player experiences, both through revolutionary gameplay and engaging stories, they have also steered away from any multiplayer experience.
I downloaded the game earlier this morning and I’m trying to get in a match but it just takes forever to get a match. I haven’t even found a match.
Egregious DRM and poor matchmaking mar an otherwise surprisingly fun and accessible multiplayer shooter. He’d be laughed out of the office. There’s a formula for making a movie blockbuster. Games are different. In the world of games, it’s entirely possible for someone to walk into an important person’s office, pitch ‘Batman on rollerskates’ and walk out with a signed contract. Gotham City Impostors is the result this pitch.
You play one of a team of plucky wannabe Batman or Jokers, given a stack of ridiculous weapons, tools and gadgets and charged with annihilating the other team in creative and violent ways. The core of Impostors is a well-executed Modern Warfare clone, and the weapons are as weighty and satisfying as that implies. Floating damage numbers means there’s good visual feedback as to what harm your shots are doing, and the more unusual weapons tend to have big colourful effects so you can easily tell what’s going on.
Killing players and accomplishing objectives earns you XP, which levels you up, unlocking different weapons and abilities. The joy is in the insanity slathered on top.

Cons: Atrocious matchmaking; only five maps; obnoxious attempts to upsell its DLC; can take forever to get into a game.
You spin around and aim your weapon upwards, trying to catch a glimpse of the menace Spotting a nearby trampoline and bouncing off of it far into the air, you pull out a grappling hook at the apex and shoot it towards a distant building. Zooming across the sky you spot your prey, running along a nearby roof, and you disengage your hook and drop down behind him. You pull a jack-in-the-box out of your pocket and throw it at him, cackling madly as it explodes in a direct hit and the screen tells you how many experience points you just earned from his death.
First note the title, however- you’re not playing Batman, the Joker, or anyone sanctioned by either character. Or something. Cause really, story? Not that you ever need an excuse for that. The combat is insanely fast and fun and actually feels quite different than most shooters, not only because of the thematic weaponry. Besides the many standard weapons you are given – everything from pistols to rocket launchers – you can equip gadgets to maneuver around the maps with ease.
All of this along with the many features scattered around the world like ramps, trampolines, etc. The matches are great but variety may be an issue for some, as there are a mere five maps and three multiplayer modes to compete in.
