The West Indian Domestic Scheme was a targeted immigration program through which approximately 3, women from the Caribbean came to Canada to work as domestic servants. While still very restrictive, it increased Black immigration to Canada in the post-Second World War era, when discriminatory immigration policies limited the entry of non-white immigrants. The Department of Citizenship and Immigration launched the Scheme in to help meet the demand for domestic labour.
In its first year, there was a quota of , but the system was so successful that annual quotas increased through the s. To be eligible, women had to be single, between 18 and 35 years of age, have at least an 8 th grade education, and pass a medical examination conducted by Canadian immigration officials. The women who came to Canada as part of the scheme were paid less than they anticipated while also being required to work longer hours.
After five years in the country, regardless of if they continued to work in the domestic field, they were eligible for Canadian citizenship. There were efforts made to spread the women across the country, in particular to rural and western Canada, but most preferred the social and economic opportunities presented by large urban centres. The women confronted racial discrimination and hostility on arrival in Canada.
Few had worked as domestics before migrating and many had no plans to continue working in the domestic field after a year.

It begged the question: What could a half-black, half-Jewish Canadian know about Jamaica? As the Toronto-born child of a Jamaican mother and Trinidadian father, I grew up with Caribbean culture as a central part of my everyday life. In the s and ’70s, when revised immigration laws made it easier for people of color to come to Canada, large numbers of West Indians made their way over and settled primarily in Toronto and its surrounding areas.
My own grandmother, mother, and aunts all came for this exact reason, gravitating toward the growing communities that were already present when they arrived. Over the last few years, Drake has increasingly incorporated Jamaica and dancehall culture into his music and persona. Before his collaborations with artists like Popcaan, his social media feeds were peppered with patois phrases, dancehall lyrics, and homages to artists like Buju Banton and Vybz Kartel.

Saw his place and visited with friends. They offer great range – doubles, paratha rotis with different choices of meat, rice dishes. We had curried duck and paratha. It was very tasty. Worth a visit. Being from the southern Caribbean I know what a real Roti tastes like and this is it!! I have been going to this restaurant for over 10yrs and it never disappoints.. A friend that used to work in the Caribbean was coming from the US Midwest to Toronto for a conference and wanted to get together over a meal.
He badly wanted to eat some paratha roti, so my wife and I Googled for restaurants that served it. So that’s where we decided to go. We were not disappointed.

West Indian immigrants to the United States fare better than native-born African Americans on a wide array of economic measures, including labor force participation, earnings, and occupational prestige. Some researchers argue that the root of this difference lies in differing cultural attitudes toward work, while others maintain that white Americans favor West Indian blacks over African Americans, giving them an edge in the workforce.

Indian Canadians are Canadians with ancestry from India. According to Statistics Canada , Indian Canadians are one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, making up the second largest non-European group after Chinese Canadians. Canada contains the world’s eighth largest Indian diaspora. The largest group of Indian Canadians are of Punjabi origin, accounting for around 50 percent of the Indo-Canadian population.
The Indo-Canadian community started around the late 19th century. On their subsequent journey home, they visited the western coast of Canada , primarily British Columbia which at the time was very sparsely populated and the Canadian government wanted to settle in order to prevent a takeover of the territory by the United States.
Upon retiring from the army, some of these men found their pensions to be inadequate. Some of them also found their land and estates back home in India were utilized by money lenders. They decided to try their fortunes in the countries they had visited. They were able to get work in the police force and some were employed as night-watchmen by British firms. Others started small businesses of their own. These were modest beginnings but they had bigger ideas. Punjabi Sikhs, who had seen Canada, recommended the New World to their fellow countrymen who were in a position to venture out and seek new fortunes.
Overcoming their initial reluctance to go to these countries due to the treatment of Asians by the white population, many young men chose to go, having been assured that they would not meet the same fate.
